Of Experiments and Findings
|
Dr Venkata Srinu Bhadram, Assistant Professor of Physics, SIAS, is currently conducting experiments at the Elettra Synchrotron Trieste, Italy. He is curious to know how biological molecules such as peptides behave under extreme mechanical stresses. This study has implications in understanding how living organisms survive the extreme pressure conditions such as those present at oceanic depths. At Elettra, he uses Diamond Anvil Cell and X-ray Diffraction techniques to study the molecular packing of the peptides in situ under high pressures. His trip to Trieste is funded by ICTP (Italy) and DST (India).

On 5 April, Yuvan Aves, naturalist, writer, and educator delivered a talk at Krea University titled Advocacy, Education and Citizen science along the Chennai coast. This talk was part of the Krea Environmental Studies Talk series.
Chennai's/North Tamil Nadu's identity is the coast and wetlands. Consciously or unconsciously, every aspect of our lives in this geography is shaped by this nature. Yuvan Aves believes there comes a time when a city begins to collapse under its own weight when it forgets its own ecological and sociological bedrock. In this talk, he shared stories from his practice as an activist and nature educator, drawing from some recent campaigns for coastal landscapes and their outcomes/shortcomings, his work with children of fisher communities evolving a new pedagogy of learning, and citizen science initiatives which have protected places, species, and people.
