The Chi’nar tree holds a special ritual, cultural and economic significance for the Kashmir Valley. It has been considered a sanctuary and a symbol of love, peace and prosperity, and revered as an earthy counterpart of the Tree of Bliss by the Mughal emperors and Sufi saints. Imported to the region from Persia, over the centuries, the tree has been providing aesthetic, ecological and economic service to the region.
Dr Numani provided a historical perspective on garden culture and discussed the flourishing of the idea of landscape gardening in Kashmir, with a focus on the Chi’nar tree. He took the audience on a virtual tour of some of the oldest Chi’nar gardens in Srinagar through a selection of photographs, and elaborated on how the transformation of the landscapes and constructing new places have come at the expense of erasing the ecological past of the region.
