A Round-up of the Kreaverse
|
April is ending, and the students at Krea are headed to their much-deserved term break. They are moving on to etch new stories of their own this summer. The Krea community is also actively working towards the most anticipated event of the year, Convocation 2024.
This week was anchored around many critical discourses steered by our faculty members and research centres, and a celebration of its own, centred around the initiatives by our eco-warriors as we got together and raised a toast to them, this World Earth Day. We are working towards a better planet, with steps big and small, each day.
As the summer sun shines bright on us, we are also looking to shine a light on the intent and purpose behind our weekly dispatch. We aim for it to be comprehensive in information and easy to access for all stakeholders within and beyond Krea. To this end, we will attempt to reshape the way we disseminate news through Krea, this Week and this may involve collecting feedback from the Krea community. We are open to critical feedback on what we could do better and this summer will be dedicated to unveiling a humble new look that’s better in some ways, if not all. We request your kind support in this collective project. We will reach out for the same, soon.
For now, here is a recap of some of the news from the Kreaverse, just a few scrolls down. As always, if you have stories or news to share with the Krea community, we invite you to connect with us at all.commsteam@krea.edu.in

How would Ambedkar have responded to the shrinking space for dissent in contemporary India? For the past three decades, there has been a serious divide between some Dalit castes that accessed reservations and others who could not. While the latter demand sub-classification of SC reservations in the name of social justice, the former counter such demands in the name of unity within the Dalit category. If Ambedkar were to be alive, what kind of solution would he have offered? In a move toward eradication of caste, Ambedkar in his "Annihilation of Caste" argued that only 'fusion of blood' can truly evoke the sense of kinship. How can we advance Ambedkar's project of the annihilation of caste? Drawing from Ambedkar's insights, the proposed lecture aims to reflect upon the questions of freedom of speech, social justice and annihilation of caste in our times.

While other energy sources are becoming more popular, India is expected to continue to depend on coal in the coming years. This study aims to identify and assess barriers to the efficient supply of coal to non-core industries reliant on this energy source. Employing a hybrid approach combining Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), the authors analyse the hierarchical structure and causal relationships among barriers affecting the coal sourcing process. The hybrid model emphasises that the 'biased government approach' and 'lack of mining technology and infrastructure' are crucial barriers. These key barriers exert a substantial influence on other factors within the scope of our study. Unlike earlier studies, this research enhances theoretical understanding by thoroughly exploring barriers to effective coal sourcing strategies. Policymakers engaged in decision-making for the non-core coal-dependent sector in India can benefit from this research. Attention should be directed towards addressing key barriers influencing effective coal sourcing, specifically focusing on ‘biased approach by the government’, ‘lack of mining technology and infrastructure’, ‘social and political constraints’, ‘low research and development’, and ‘lack of skilled personnel’.

I was awarded a scholarship of Rs 10 lakhs, the highest offered amount. In addition to the scholarship award, I have also received the travel grant award. This wouldn't be possible without the guidance and support of my professors at Krea University, particularly that of my capstone supervisor Dr Vinod Kumar Saranathan. I hope to continue working in science; understanding disease mechanisms and contributing to therapeutic advancement."

Adolescent suicides pose a significant public health challenge in India, necessitating a concerted effort to understand and address the underlying factors and implement preventive measures. Through the webinar, Unlocking Insights: Risk Factors for Suicidal Behaviour Among Adolescents in the Indian Context, LEAD at Krea University aims to foster a deeper understanding of the issue and pave the way for evidence-based interventions to enhance the well-being of adolescents.
|
Access to accurate data and resources is imperative for addressing adolescent suicides. In this regard, the Banyan Academy for Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) and LEAD at Krea University undertook a systematic review of the literature to identify prevalent risk factors contributing to suicidal behaviour among adolescents in India, using the Integrated Motivational-Volitional model.
The webinar will disseminate important findings from the study, delving into how suicide risks evolve. A panel comprising experts and stakeholders from academia, healthcare, development, and education will engage in discussions on evidence-based methods to identify risk factors and predictive pathways. Additionally, they will explore strategies for filling knowledge and data gaps to address this critical issue.
Please note that this is a closed-door event, and participation is by invitation only. The webinar is slated for 27 April, 2024 from 3.00-4.00 pm.
