Others without otherness: Ramchandra Gandhi and the mirror of consciousness
Join us for an insightful talk by Dr James Madaio on the topic: Others without Otherness: Ramchandra Gandhi and the Mirror of Consciousness, organised by the Moturi Satyanarayana Centre for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The event will take place on 28 February, 2024, at 2:30 pm, at Seminar Hall - 2, Krea University.

The talk explores how the philosopher Ramchandra Gandhi (1937-2007) approaches plurality and ‘the other’ through a transformative investigation of communication and Advaita-informed philosophical hermeneutics. Broadly, it is argued that R Gandhi’s understanding of the play of communicative relationality parallels his understanding of the līlā of consciousness, which becomes an alterity to itself to ‘play the great game’ of self-discovery. The presentation closely examines the philosophical implications of his mature model of understanding plurality as images on the mirror or screen of consciousness. Differentiating elements of his approach from classical Advaita Vedānta, the talk situates his understanding within a post-sampradāyic context, drawing genealogical parallels with the Tamil sage Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) and the textual currents associated with his āśrama, particularly the Tripurārahasya. In doing so, the talk demonstrates how his approach to identity and difference disrupts the divide between ontological monism and pluralism, offering a sophisticated vision of others without otherness. Colouring Their Heart Out
The recent Colour Your Heart Out event, hosted by the peer support programme, aimed to raise awareness about the programme while offering attendees a communal setting to engage with their peer support volunteers. These volunteers, dedicated to lending an empathetic ear and assistance to all, whether seeking a listening ear, resources for navigating life's challenges, or simply craving connection with like-minded individuals, were at the heart of the gathering.

Activities such as mandala colouring and heart map completion fostered an atmosphere of creativity and self-reflection. Mandalas, known for their aesthetic appeal and calming influence on the mind, have been a recurrent feature in the programme's events, serving as tools for relaxation and mindfulness. Heart maps, templates designed for participants to identify and express their deepest values, dreams, passions, and relationships, offered attendees a structured yet personal means of introspection.
The event, held throughout the afternoon at the Atrium on the Sri City campus, provided an open-door policy, welcoming individuals to drop in at their convenience and stay as long as desired. Within this inclusive space, attendees found warmth, camaraderie, and a supportive environment conducive to personal growth and connection.
