Join us for a talk by Prof Amritanshu Prasad from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai on Simultaneous Conjugacy Classes. The talk will delve into the intriguing study of simultaneous conjugacy classes of tuples in finite and compact groups. Prof Prasad's research sheds light on the connections between these classes and representation theory, specifically the tensor products of irreducible representations. He explores the sum of squares of Kronecker coefficients and its relation to the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of pairs. Additionally, a weighted sum of Kronecker coefficients reveals insights into the number of simultaneous conjugacy pairs that are conjugate to their inverses. (This is based on joint work with Dilpreet Kaur, Sunil Prajapati, Jyotirmoy Ganguly, Digjoy Paul and K N Raghavan).

Celebrating the Legacy of the Founder of Modern Computing
On June 23, the birth anniversary of Alan Turing, the renowned figure considered the founder of modern computer science, was celebrated. In an article titled Alan Turing and the Limits of Computation, published in The Wire, Dr TVH Prathamesh, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at SIAS, reflects on Turing's multifaceted scientific accomplishments. Turing's notable roles as a code-breaker during World War II, a visionary in Artificial Intelligence (AI), a pioneer in theoretical biology, and a founding figure in theoretical computer science are widely acknowledged. However, Dr Prathamesh emphasises that Turing's lasting scientific impact lies in his fundamental contributions to the mathematical development of computing as a discipline.

Decoding Enterobacterial Sensory Proteins
Dr Athi N Naganathan from IIT Madras delivered a talk titled Dynamic Homo- versus Hetero-Oligomerization Drives Thermo-Osmo Responsiveness of Enterobacterial Sensory Proteins on 23 March 2023 at Krea University as part of the Biology & Chemistry lecture series. The talk focussed on environmentally regulated gene expression in bacteria and the role of macromolecules in sensing the environment. Dr Naganathan discussed the molecular mechanisms of thermo- and osmo-sensing by two sensory proteins, Cnu and H-NS, using a range of experimental and computational methods. The talk highlighted the heterogeneity of H-NS, its oligomeric nature, and the competition between homo- and hetero-oligomerization of protein-protein and protein-DNA complexes. These dynamics play a crucial role in enterobacteria's stress response and genomic compaction.

Exploring the Ecological Imagination
Writer Mihir Vatsa led a 90-minute session on Nature and Place Writing at Krea University on 14 March 2023. The session aimed to enhance participants' understanding of their role within the human-non-human ecosystem. Through the exercise of spatialisation, students were encouraged to imagine various types of spaces within a single geographical location, ranging from utopic to dystopic, personal to general. The masterclass aimed to foster creativity and prompt exploration of ideological binaries such as nature versus civilisation, wilderness versus urban areas, and the relationship between humans and nature.
