As we gaze into the Future Forward, our resolute mission is to be a catalyst of change and create lasting value through change that is multi-dimensional. In line with this ethos, Krea is preparing research leaders who can tackle global challenges with knowledge, ingenuity, skills, and empathy. And hence the IFMR Graduate School of Business (GSB) PhD programme which aligns with this mission will be open for the 2024 intake in the coming days. Admissions to the undergraduate programmes at the School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences (SIAS) and IFMR GSB, as well as the MBA programme at IFMR GSB, also are open, looking for the next cohort of Kreators.
This week, the campus was abuzz with extraordinary sessions across disciplines, the hearty achievements of our students, the robust schedule of the Wellbeing Week and so much more, and the upcoming week will be no different. We continue to learn, explore, discover, debate, engage, recreate, relax and repeat. The Krea community continues with the zeal to contribute to society and humankind.

At the heart of SIAS, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Club strives to cultivate a dynamic space for students and academics passionate about innovation and entrepreneurial endeavours. The Club’s mission is to provide a nurturing environment for individuals keen on exploring the realms of innovation and entrepreneurship, with an aim to foster creativity, critical thinking, and the spirit of enterprise.
The Club’s journey has witnessed engaging workshops, collaborative projects, and speaker sessions. They have worked hand in hand with various clubs, creating a diverse tapestry of events that include hackathons, business idea pitches, and networking mixers.

An information session by Sussex University was held on November 22, 2023 led by Dr Doug Haynes, Director at Sussex Liberal Arts, Reader in American Literature and Visual Culture. The session gave a full understanding of Sussex University and its programme offerings and also of the UK admissions process and the requirements for making a strong application.

The Student-led Career Development Cell, in collaboration with the Career Services Office (CSO), is hosting a Career Fair at Krea University. The on-campus Krea Career Fair on November 25, 2023 will offer a valuable platform for organisations to engage with our students, share industry insights, and create meaningful connections. The fair promises to be a robust networking opportunity.

The Career Services Office is also hosting a Higher Education Day in the Krea University Campus on November 30, 2023. The higher education event aims to introduce Krea undergraduate students to the opportunities and options available post their education at Krea. Students who attend the fair will learn about higher education options in various geographies, scholarships available to them, accommodation options, and visa requirements. The fair will be held at the Atrium between 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on the Sri City Campus.

Impact of Educational Policies on Indian Tribal Communities
|
The second talk of Moturi Satyanarayana Centre for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Krea University will be conducted in the hybrid mode on November 29, 2023, between 2:30 pm - 03:45 pm at SH-2 on the Krea University campus. However, the language in educational policies of the Indian government pays little attention to the languages spoken by them. This paper examines the impact of India’s educational policies on the Toda tribes in the Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu, focussing on their mother tongue, Toda.

Multilingual Intelligence and the Human Mind
|
An interesting talk was hosted as part of the Krea Psychology Lecture Series on November 24, 2023 between 2.30 – 4.20 pm IST, titled Multilingual Intelligence (MI) and the Politics of Educational Reform. The talk was led by Prof Minati Panda, Chairperson, Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. The concept, Multilingual Intelligence (MI) is advocated for understanding human minds in economically challenging multilingual societies in the Global South.

The attempt here was not to replace ontologically bounded imaginaries of old concepts and theories of intelligence with a new one, but to look at human intelligence from another lens of cognitive flexibility, constraints and the ability to metaphorise and, offer a new theory of intelligence that supports educational reforms that are truly inclusive and integral to the life world of all the people in developing societies

Exploration of The Earth’s Magnetic Field
|
Participants delved into the mysteries of the Earth's magnetic field with Dr Nandini Nagarajan, a distinguished geophysicist with over fifty years of expertise in electromagnetism and geomagnetism. The talk was held on November 22, 2023 on the Krea University campus. From the ancient observations of auroras to the cutting-edge understanding of energy transfer from the Sun, Dr Nagarajan guided participants through the evolution of theories and observations over two centuries. Explore the connections with the Sun's activity, the Earth's internal structure, and the mathematical tapestry that ties it all together.

How Human Intellect Develops
|
There will be a PSYC Workshop titled From an Internalist to Cultural-Historical Paradigm in Psychology: Reading Piaget and Vygotsky hosted on November 25, 2023 at Seminar Hall 2, JSW Academic Block. This workshop engages with the fundamental question of how human intellect develops. It draws on the works of two fundamental thinkers – Jean Piaget and Lev S Vygotsky and traces the movement of ideas and knowledge in Psychology. The workshop will be led by Prof Minati Panda, Chairperson of the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and the Director of the National Multilingual Education Resource Consortium (NMRC), JNU.

An essay on feminine intimacy and possibilities of impossible friendships by Dr Panchali Ray, Associate Dean (Academic), Associate Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies, SIAS, Krea University has been published in Qurbatein, the bi-annual publication by the Centre for Studies in Gender and Sexuality at Ashoka University. The essay is titled, Friendship Sans Symmetry - The Unlawfulness of Feminine Intimacy and is part of an issue titled (un)desirable Histories.

An article by Prof Ramachandra Guha, Distinguished University Professor at SIAS, Krea University, titled Are bad ideas at the root of the ecological crisis? was published in Telegraph India and Scroll. The article explores the role of bad ideas in the genesis of the ecological crisis. Centred on the book Man and Nature: The Spiritual Crisis of Modern Man (1968) by Prof Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Prof Guha delves into the historical and cultural roots of environmental degradation, highlighting flawed concepts such as the separation of humans from nature and the prioritisation of economic growth over environmental sustainability, that have contributed significantly to the current environmental challenges we face.

IFMR GSB's PhD Scholar, Soumyabrata Basu, presented a paper titled, Incorporating Human Knowledge in Explainable AI Research - How Experts Align with Machine-Generated Predictors of Bankruptcy at the International Conference on Management Research organised by IIT Madras. The research work executed under the supervision of Prof Amit Das used classification algorithms to generate bankruptcy predictors. Next, a survey was conducted among experts to understand whether they agree with the machine-generated predictors.

They find a high degree of mutual agreement among the experts. It is evident that the justifiability of the selected input variables affects the comprehensibility of model outputs to the experts.

Narbadeshwar Mishra, IFMR GSB’s PhD Scholar presented the paper titled, Temperature Shocks, Crime, and Social Welfare Programs: Evidence from India at 12th South Asia Economic Policy Network Conference hosted by World Bank Group, Dhaka, Bangladesh between October 30-31, 2023. This paper provides evidence on the effect of temperature shocks on crime rates in India and offers insights into how government-introduced social welfare programs like MGNREGA can mitigate these pernicious effects of temperature shocks. The paper is co-authored with Mugdha Kinhikar, PhD scholar at IFMR GSB, Krea University.

Over the course of four centuries, there have been significant shifts in its social, economic, and political landscape, shaping the metropolis as we see it today. A new initiative by LEAD at Krea University (IFMR) and Empowering Communities Through Education (ECTE) seeks to trace this journey, by encouraging historical research and writing centered around the city, weaving together the past and present. initiative will encourage historical research and writing through small grants, peer support, and workshops. Selected participants will be provided a stipend and invited to present their work in a series of curated writing workshops. A diverse panel of experts specialising in historical studies and social sciences including faculty members from SIAS, Krea University will guide this effort.

The release event of For Now, It Is Night, a collection of short stories by Hari Krishna Kaul translated from the Kashmiri by Kalpana Raina, Tanveer Ajsi, Gowhar Fazili & Gowhar Yaqoob was hosted today, on November 24, 2023. The book release was followed by a conversation 'on the idea of translation'. Two translators, Gowhar Fazili and Kalpana Raina read out of the book and reflected on the experience.

The TP Kota and Magic Falls trek, organised by Sahas Club, took place on November 18, 2023 and proved to be an exhilarating experience for all participants. The trek did not only provide the experience of a day trek but also a night one. The event was carefully planned to provide students and other members with a unique adventure, fostering team spirit and a love for the outdoors. Sahas Club meticulously organised the trip, ensuring a seamless experience for all participants. The planning process involved the core committee members and team leaders working together for a week to coordinate safety assessments, logistical preparations, meal arrangements, and other details to ensure that everyone had a safe and fun journey.

There were a total of about 60 students and 4 to 5 staff and faculty members who joined for the trek. The success of the trek owes to the dedicated volunteers – Adan Qureshi , Daniel George , Aditya Shivak, Anoop Yadav, Vaibhav Kapoor and an alumni from the founding batch of SIAS, Krea University, Ashutosh Verma.

The event was held in Mumbai where representatives of the UN Secretary General’s office and office bearers of UNICEF and other organisations, were present.

J Joel Samuel and Aishwarya Vedachalam, IFMR GSB MBA Cohort of 2024 were the first runners-up at PrAIyaan 1.0, a national-level case competition hosted by Cognition - The Data Science and Analytics Club of Goa Institute of Management (GIM), in collaboration with @i3 - The Industry Institute Interaction Club of GIM and Aarohan - The Leadership Interaction Club. The competition's core objective was to utilise generative AI tools and data to innovate eye care hospital strategies, in turn leveraging technology for real-world solutions.
