Dr Lakshman Varanasi, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, SIAS, Krea University was the most recent speaker at Koffee GoSip on 3 April, 2024. The title of his talk was, A systems biology approach to understanding human health.
The expression of a gene, for the manifestation of a physiological, anatomical, or behavioural feature, depends on the context of environmental and lifestyle.
A person’s normal, or basal, state of health is different from another’s and is the correct background against which any deviation from the basal state may be predicted, sensed, recognised, viewed, or measured. A person’s past and present physiological and mental state must therefore be recorded faithfully, and in fine contextual detail. Such a record will deepen our understanding of the association of lifestyle and environment with baseline health, and enable the prospective management of one’s health.

Nationalism, Invented Traditions and Indian Politics
A Talk on Nationalism, Invented Traditions and Indian Politics led by Professor Andrew Wyatt, University of Bristol, UK was held today on 5 April, 2024.
This talk reflected on the ways in which nationalism is conceptualised with reference to the case of India. Professor Wyatt argues that nations are subjective constructs manifested in stories and narratives. He specified an ideological and ‘political’ interpretation of nationalism. This is linked to a discussion of official nationalism in India in which he argues that official nationalism is often presented in the form of invented traditions (Hobsbawm 1983).
He elaborated on four facets of invented traditions that help clarify the term; namely: ritual and symbolism, repetition, normativity and links to the past. He briefly considers how these traditions have been re-invented since 2014, before reflecting on the significance of these changes.

Here is the event note from the curators- “Rather than dismantling the prevailing concept of Krea as a closed-off, isolated haven, we want to intersect it with experiences of queer individuals, students from diverse social-economic backgrounds who are an integral part of the cultural fabric at Krea University. This photo series is a medium to explore one's voice and a route to inquiry, empowering our participants to use their documented experiences to see and affirm themselves. We challenge the unconscious segregation on campus by shedding light on diverse individual experiences that are overlooked and lost upon us.”

Second in our series, Architects of Impact, in collaboration with Water, Environment, Land and Livelihoods (WELL) Labs. Turning the spotlight on - Jaltol
Semi-arid parts of India face a unique problem. Most farmers have small landholdings and are reliant on increasingly unpredictable rainfall. However, the country’s water resources are already overexploited, leaving little room to expand irrigation.
Jaltol, an open-source data analytics tool, can help grassroots organisations working on managing water resources do so more efficiently. It makes accessible the data locked into inaccessible formats and enables problem diagnosis, intervention planning, and impact assessment of rural water security.
