We are nearing the end of a chapter, wrapping up a term and concluding programmes for many learners at Krea. Students have sailed through the pages of these months with numerous accomplishments and celebrations and now they are occupied with tests, and the promise of a new beginning, may it be an internship, a new career role or a new path in higher education. April is the month of new beginnings as we also look back and turn the pages of the bygone; as fresh steps are taken with the firm knowledge of learnings, lessons and a gaze into the future forward. There is hope, humility, joy and gratitude in the air, and there is also a flurry of excitement and anticipation.
Krea, this Week raises a toast to our relentless pursuit in creating a resilient generation that can tackle complexities and build a better, healthier, just and kind world, one young leader at a time. Eshita Chaturvedi and Malyaj Jain of IFMR GSB’s MBA Cohort of 2025 recently bagged top honours in the EY Young Leaders Business Case Competition.The team competed with some tough opponents and showcased their strategic skills and innovative ideas to solve real-world problems. In the first round, they presented a startup idea with a focus on the theme of - building a better working world. After winning the round, they presented it to the EY panel and emerged victorious. The event was held towards the end of 2023.

Krea Connect was great, but now it gets even better. Krea Connect has always been a one-stop help desk for all things Krea for aspirants and now, it will offer dedicated weekly virtual interactions on the most frequently sought for topics.
This Wednesday, it was all about the Academics at SIAS, Krea University and the upcoming session on 24 April, 2024 will be about the support Krea provides during the transition from high school to university life. If you may know any interested candidates, please do ask them to register.

History of Blue Colour in Nature and Culture
|
|
|
Dr Vinod Kumar Saranathan, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, SIAS, Krea University and Dr Annu Jalais, Associate Professor of Anthropology, SIAS, Krea University have co-authored an article on the history of blue colour in nature and culture, titled La couleur bleue : des pigments à l’auto-assemblage, published in Photoniques, the official journal of the French Optical Society.

The Art & Ecology (Arts235/Envs237) organised an anthology evening of film, photography, and final projects. This course approached interrelationships between aesthetic and ecocritical principles through a broad spectrum of artistic practice, philosophy, mainstream and indigenous science, and community engagement. Held on 16 April, 2024 the evening included a film screening of Here/Hear • ఇక్కడ/విన్ను • இங்கே/கேள் • यहाँ/सुनो - a short film about campus, community and connection by Pratibha Khullar, Sandhya Thiagarajamurthy, and Shloka Uchil. Here/Hear delves into what it means to be here, at Krea, and to hear. It was followed by the final projects’ presentation by the students.

On 16 April, 2024, the students of Arts 233 - Firing Methods took the audience through their experience of hands-on learning, about fire, firing processes, and ceramic kilns. The event was interactive and included a display.

Ambedkar Week Celebrations
|
|
|
Ambedkar Jayanti falls on 14 April, commemorating the birth of Dr B R Ambedkar and this day serves as a celebration of his significant contributions to society as a social reformer, jurist, and political leader. In honour of Ambedkar Jayanti, ILS (Inclusive Learning Support) and Division of Politics collaborated to host a series of events.
The celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti commenced on 7 April, 2024, with Parai Attam, a traditional percussion performance, followed by a Reading Circle on 8 April, 2024, discussing Ambedkar’s essay titled ‘Buddha and Karl Marx’. After the mid-week break, the celebration resumed with a virtual lecture by Professor Syed Sayeed on 10 April, 2024, exploring the relevance of Ambedkar’s ‘Annihilation of Caste’ to Identity Politics in India today. To conclude the week-long celebration, movie screenings were held on 13 and 14 April, 2024, featuring Blue Star and Sarpatta Parambarai depicting caste dynamics in India.

Understanding the Universe through Neutrinos
|

Dr Sushant Raut, Assistant Professor of Physics, SIAS, Krea University has been invited to deliver lectures at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bangalore as a part of their 'Understanding the Universe through Neutrinos' school (22 April to 3 May, 2024). This programme is aimed at PhD students who are starting their research in particle physics. Dr Raut will train the students in simulating long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments which help us to probe the masses of subatomic particles and the symmetries underlying their interactions.

Concluding our series, Architects of Impact, in collaboration with Water, Environment, Land and Livelihoods (WELL) Labs, with the spotlight on their partnership with DCB Bank and Friends of Lakes to demonstrate a scientific approach to lake rejuvenation that takes into account the ecology and communities' needs.
With climate change, many regions are experiencing extreme variability in rainfall. While Karnataka experienced drought in 16 of the past 23 years, it also witnessed recurrent floods.

To mitigate these problems, both residents and government officials have rallied to rejuvenate polluted and encroached lakes. Surface water bodies can be a source of drinking water, help with groundwater recharge and build resilience against floods, apart from a host of other benefits. However, many lake rejuvenation projects focus on surface-level beautification, such as walkways and concretisation.
